Please Consider a Donation to Lutheran Disaster Response
Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) brings God’s hope, healing and renewal to people everywhere whose lives have been disrupted by disasters. Your gifts make it possible for this church to provide fast and effective support to communities in need, whenever and wherever a disaster may strike and 100% of your gift is used for the disaster that you specify. Please consider a donation to Lutheran Disaster Response today, either through your “directed giving” offering envelope or mail your gift directly to them. Thanks!

Take Note of New Rotation System

Following the success of other churches who have utilized the assignment of opportunities for participation in worship services, we will begin a rotation of worship volunteers starting with May and June. Watch your mail in mid-April for an envelope with detailed information and a schedule of worship volunteer assignments for regular services in May & June. For now, there are a few blanks left to be filled in April. Please sign up if you are able. Thank you!

Christmas at Bethany 2019 is December 14!!

The date for Christmas at Bethany… Yesterday & today has been announced! Mark your calendars now for this event, happening on Saturday, December 14, 2019! It’s never too early to start working on those craft projects, or perfecting your lefse making! How will you take part in Christmas at Bethany this year? We will need many hands to make this tradition the wonderful event that it is. Would you like to take charge of the tea room? Or maybe you would like to work on advertising and promoting this year’s event… However you decide, we will look forward to coming together in fun and fellowship. Many hands make light work!

Consider joining this group!
This is a group contemplative practice offered once a month, with your choice of two dates. On the second Thursday and second Saturday of each month, a group gathers for reflection and lectio divina (listening to the Spirit in Scripture) together and individually. This is meant to enhance your prayer life and teach you some new spiritual practices in a group setting. This group meets at: The Way Station on the NE corner of 3rd and Grand Avenue. If you have questions, please contact Deb Mechler at 712-260-3286. Give it a try!

Are you able to help?
Office Volunteers are needed to help answer the phone during our Tuesday afternoon staff meetings and to cover some other times coming up in the next few weeks. This would involve light office work, greeting visitors and answering the telephone. If you are able to help please look over the schedule at the Welcome Center and sign up to help as you are able. Thank you!

Keep alert for more on this...
You may have noticed the AED in the hallway by the church offices. This device was received through a grant opportunity made possible by Clay County Emergency Medical Services. So– just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Recently some of our council members received training on how to use an AED and in the coming weeks there will be opportunities for others to learn. Watch for more details coming in the newsletter and bulletins.

Sign up for a Sunday in 2019
Many thanks to everyone who provided flowers to beautify the altar in 2018. The flower chart for 2019 is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. If you are interested in providing altar flowers for a service in this new year, please fill out a yellow card and leave it at the church office or in the offering plate.

Saturday Mornings -- All Are Welcome!

One of the greatest challenges to men's spiritual, mental and physical health is the lack of close friends. Research tells us that men without a circle of close friends are far more likely to suffer from such things as anxiety and heart disease. Healthy men are connected to Christ and each other. Men Of Bethany (MOB) meet every Saturday morning at 7:30am for breakfast and a Bible study. This group welcomes everyone! Come as you are – enjoy the fellowship – you’ll leave feeling better. J

Keep "in the know" with happenings at Bethany!
Keep current with news and events at Bethany via our monthly newsletter! ”The Bethany Herald” is typically mailed at the end of each month. Delivery options include U.S. mail or email (depending on your preference), or find a link on our website to download a PDF of the Herald. If you are a member and not receiving our newsletter, please stop by or give a call to the church office (262-2327) to let us know. Non-members are welcome to receive the newsletter, too – likewise, just let us know that you’d like to get on our mailing list. If you are receiving the Herald in the mail and want to switch to electronic delivery, send an email request to us at  REMINDER:  If you are submitting items for the Herald, please deliver them to the office by the 20th of the month. Thanks!!

Share a picture!
You may have noticed that we’ve had pictures interspersed in the Sunday on-screen announcements. We’d like to feature some snapshots provided by you! If you have a favorite shot you’d like to share, please email it to: or bring it to the office and we will scan a digital image and have it “on the big screen”. Thanks!

Share your time & talents!!
The Archive Committee needs your help. A room in the lower level of the church is being renovated to contain our important papers, blueprints, photos, memorabilia, etc. Good recordkeeping is important for homes, businesses, taxes, and the milestones in our lives. An archive holds and preserves documents that provide evidence of the past are produced in a variety of formats from paper to electronic. These materials require protection and preservation to prevent the loss of your congregation's history that would occur if the material was neglected. Are you interested in joining the archive committee? Give us a call (262-2327) and let us know!

You Can Help Support this Mission
Please consider making a donation to support this mission of Bethany that provides morning milk at Johnson School for students who are unable to have it as part of their snack. The program also helps with meals for families in crisis and holiday meals at the public schools for struggling families. This ensures a festive and nutritious meal at Thanksgiving & Christmas time, so no child is embarrassed by having to sit at a separate table with only a sandwich if their parents are behind on payments. Let’s help make “room at the table” for everyone!

Join the Sound Booth Crew!
Please consider joining the tech team. Projector operators, camera/video recorders and sound people are needed for our worship services. These are step-by-step processes that you can learn and we are willing to train. If you would like to be a part of the “tech team” please sign up at the Welcome Center. You will be contacted with information about some upcoming training sessions. Thanks!

Let your voice be heard!
This department of the greater church works for change in public policy based on the experience of Lutheran ministries, programs, and projects around the world and in communities across the United States. Our faith calls us to learn more and speak out on issues affecting our vulnerable neighbors and the forces threatening creation. For an abundance of resources to educate and equip you to be a more effective advocate visit this website: and let your voice be heard!

Newsletter Series
It’s time to celebrate the lives of the ‘forever young’ in the congregation of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa. Each of these special people has a story of his or her life to relate to fellow Bethany members. Subjects for the articles will be chosen at random from Bethany records but if there is someone you would like to suggest for a special reason, please let Marilyn Meyer know – at 712-834-2644.

Celebrate with your friends at Bethany!
Would you like to bring goodies for fellowship hour to celebrate a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, good news) with Bethany friends? We serve an average of 60-80 people each Sunday. Many options include donuts, cookies, cake, cupcakes, bars, snack mixes, fruit muffins – the list is endless. Reserve a date by filling out a card, located at the Welcome Center. If you have questions, talk to a Fellowship Committee member: Sandi, 580-9593; Judi, 580-4443; Marla, 262-7450.

Collecting your used shoes!

Do you have some shoes in your closet that you don’t wear anymore? We are helping “Soles 4 Souls”, a program through Village NW Unlimited in Sheldon, by collecting shoes that have wear left in them. Sneakers, high heels, loafers, dress shoes, flip-flops, work shoes – any kind of shoes. Leave them in the collection box at the Welcome Center. Thank you!
