Thank you!

In Case of Inclement Weather...

Bethany's weather-related cancellations policy as follows: Regarding weekday activities or meetings, if the Spencer School system cancels classes, all events at the church will be cancelled for that day as well and the church office/building will be closed. Likewise, if the school system calls a late start, activities at the church will follow. Regarding weekend activities, if the weather becomes such that it may be unsafe to travel, activities may be cancelled. Cancellations will be announced on the KICD radio stations (AM 1240, FM 98.3, FM 104.9, FM 107.7), posted on Bethany’s social media sites & the Bethany website:

Keep alert for more on this...
You may have noticed the AED in the hallway by the church offices. This device was received through a grant opportunity made possible by Clay County Emergency Medical Services. So– just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Recently some of our council members received training on how to use an AED and in the coming weeks there will be opportunities for others to learn. Watch for more details coming in the newsletter and bulletins.

Birthday Kits for Church on the Street
During February you are called upon to help collect items used in “Birthday Kits” for Church on the Street in Sioux Falls. Each kit includes: one large bath towel, a full-size shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Items are rolled together and tied with a pretty bow and given at Church on the Street to individuals who have a birthday that month. Bring kit supplies or completed kits and place in the basket at the Welcome Center. Monetary donations are also accepted – the Faith in Action Committee will shop for you. Kits will be delivered in March.

Be an Advocate!!
Lutheran Services in Iowa's Lutheran Day on the Hill is a day of advocacy for Iowa's most vulnerable populations. This year's event is on Tuesday, February 19. Join LSI in Des Moines at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church and learn about the social issues affecting Iowa and talk to your legislators about keeping the social safety net secure for all Iowans. For details or to register visit (Register by February 12).

St. Luke Annual Meeting Coming Up
Bethany Lutheran Church is one of 13 local churches that founded St. Luke Lutheran Nursing Home back in 1967. The Annual Meeting of St. Luke is held on the first Sunday in March. We extend our thanks to Sandi Schmidt and Deb Mechler who will be serving as delegates for Bethany on March 3.

Wednesday, March 6 -- 7pm
Join us for Ash Wednesday services at Bethany on March 6 at 7pm. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent. The day is named for the practice of imposing ashes on foreheads. Using ashes as a sign of repentance is an ancient practice, often mentioned in the Bible (e.g., Jonah 3:5-9; Job 42:6; Jeremiah 6:26; Matthew 11:21). While marked with the ashes of human mortality, the church hears God’s promise of forgiveness and tastes God’s mercy in the bread of life and the cup of salvation.

Sunday, March 10
Are you thinking about joining Bethany or just curious about membership? Come to a membership information class to be held between services at 10:00am on Sun., March 10. We will receive new members to the Bethany congregation at worship on March 17.

Spring Ahead March 10!
Daylight Savings Time will begin on March 10. Get ready to spring ahead!!

Seeking New Members
The Parish Ed team is seeking new members for the committee. No experience is necessary and you do not have to commit to teaching Sunday School. If interested, come to their next meeting, Monday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the church parlor. Thank you for your consideration!

Sign up for a Sunday in 2019
Many thanks to everyone who provided flowers to beautify the altar in 2018. The flower chart for 2019 is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. If you are interested in providing altar flowers for a service in this new year, please fill out a yellow card and leave it at the church office or in the offering plate.

February Project
“Warming Hearts with His Love – Hat and Mitten Collection.” To participate, bring new or gently used winter hats, mittens or gloves and put them in the marked basket at the Welcome Center. Pray for the child that receives them to find the truth of God's word and grow to love Him. The hats and mittens will be given to Spencer Community Schools.

Saturday Mornings -- All Are Welcome!

One of the greatest challenges to men's spiritual, mental and physical health is the lack of close friends. Research tells us that men without a circle of close friends are far more likely to suffer from such things as anxiety and heart disease. Healthy men are connected to Christ and each other. Men Of Bethany (MOB) meet every Saturday morning at 7:30am for breakfast and a Bible study. This group welcomes everyone! Come as you are – enjoy the fellowship – you’ll leave feeling better. J

Keep "in the know" with happenings at Bethany!
Keep current with news and events at Bethany via our monthly newsletter! ”The Bethany Herald” is typically mailed at the end of each month. Delivery options include U.S. mail or email (depending on your preference), or find a link on our website to download a PDF of the Herald. If you are a member and not receiving our newsletter, please stop by or give a call to the church office (262-2327) to let us know. Non-members are welcome to receive the newsletter, too – likewise, just let us know that you’d like to get on our mailing list. If you are receiving the Herald in the mail and want to switch to electronic delivery, send an email request to us at  REMINDER:  If you are submitting items for the Herald, please deliver them to the office by the 20th of the month. Thanks!!

Share a picture!
You may have noticed that we’ve had pictures interspersed in the Sunday on-screen announcements. We’d like to feature some snapshots provided by you! If you have a favorite shot you’d like to share, please email it to: or bring it to the office and we will scan a digital image and have it “on the big screen”. Thanks!

Sign up at the Welcome Center!

Would you like to serve as a worship volunteer? Readers, greeters, communion servers, recorders and projector operators are needed. Please consider helping! The “summer” sign-up forms are at the Welcome Center. Look them over and sign up to help as you are able. Thank you for helping as a worship volunteer at Bethany!

Share your time & talents!!
The Archive Committee needs your help. A room in the lower level of the church is being renovated to contain our important papers, blueprints, photos, memorabilia, etc. Good recordkeeping is important for homes, businesses, taxes, and the milestones in our lives. An archive holds and preserves documents that provide evidence of the past are produced in a variety of formats from paper to electronic. These materials require protection and preservation to prevent the loss of your congregation's history that would occur if the material was neglected. Are you interested in joining the archive committee? Give us a call (262-2327) and let us know!

You Can Help Support this Mission
Please consider making a donation to support this mission of Bethany that provides morning milk at Johnson School for students who are unable to have it as part of their snack. The program also helps with meals for families in crisis and holiday meals at the public schools for struggling families. This ensures a festive and nutritious meal at Thanksgiving & Christmas time, so no child is embarrassed by having to sit at a separate table with only a sandwich if their parents are behind on payments. Let’s help make “room at the table” for everyone!

Join the Sound Booth Crew!
Please consider joining the tech team. Projector operators, camera/video recorders and sound people are needed for our worship services. These are step-by-step processes that you can learn and we are willing to train. If you would like to be a part of the “tech team” please sign up at the Welcome Center. You will be contacted with information about some upcoming training sessions. Thanks!

Let your voice be heard!
This department of the greater church works for change in public policy based on the experience of Lutheran ministries, programs, and projects around the world and in communities across the United States. Our faith calls us to learn more and speak out on issues affecting our vulnerable neighbors and the forces threatening creation. For an abundance of resources to educate and equip you to be a more effective advocate visit this website: and let your voice be heard!

Can you help?
We are looking for help in the office to answer the telephone Tuesday afternoons during staff meeting. Our meeting begins at 2pm and would last about 1 to 1 ½ hours. If you are able to help with this, please sign up at the Welcome Center. Thank you!
