LOVING SPENCER AUGUST PROJECT

Filling the Storehouses

Loving Spencer is focusing this month on “Filling the Storehouses” with opportunities to serve at the Spencer Seventh Day Adventist Church’s Mobile Food Pantry on Tuesday, August 6. See poster on bulletin board by the church office for details. For the entire month of August we will work to help “fill the storehouse” with collecting donations of non-perishable food items or toiletries for the Upper Des Moines Outreach Pantry. Leave donations in the baskets marked “Food Pantry” at the Welcome Center or take directly to UDMO (2512 Hwy Blvd N). August can be an exceptionally difficult month for families to make ends meet, sometimes having to choose between registering kids for school and buying groceries. Thanks for helping!

ELCA NATIONAL CHURCHWIDE ASSEMBLY

Keep Them in Your Prayers!
This triennial event is happening in Milwaukee, WI August 5-10. Lay and ordained voting members, elected by synods throughout the nation, will be in attendance. This is a process of communal spiritual discernment to bring about God’s will for God’s people. Through worship, prayer, Bible study, deliberation and plenary sessions, members of the assembly participate in and make decisions about the mission and ministry of the ELCA. Please pray for those participating in the 2019 Churchwide assembly this week.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF MISSIONS

You Can Help!
If you shop rummage sales, please look for items needed in Lutheran World Relief baby care kits such as: cloth diapers, receiving blankets, shirts, jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters (up to 24 mos.). Also, “back-to-school” sales are a great time to pick up items for school kits. Most needed at this time are: pencil sharpeners, scissors (blunt-tip), crayons (24-pack), pens, and notebooks. Other kit items needed include: nail clippers, hand towels (dark), and bath-size Ivory soap. Many thanks to all who support these missions. The Fun & Fellowship work group will meet on Thursday, August 8 at 9:00am to continue their world mission efforts. A potluck dinner is shared at noon. All are welcome!

CONFIRMATION ORIENTATION

Mark Your Calendars!
Parents of confirmation-aged students, mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 18 as the program year gets off to a start with orientation.

OUTDOOR SERVICE

Thanks to all who helped!
Our outdoor service on July 14 was a warm one, but what an awesome worship service in the great outdoors -- praising God in the beauty of God's creation! Many thanks to everyone who helped behind the scenes working out the details, to those who helped with set-up and clean-up. The extra hands are appreciated as conducting an outdoor service requires a lot of extra work.  Thank you, too, to our VBS families and to members and guests who attended the worship service! (Look for pictures on the Bethany Lutheran ELCA Face Book page)

STRATEGIC PLANNING COTTAGE MEETINGS

An Opportunity to Vision for Bethany's Future
Many thanks to all who attended a strategic planning “cottage meeting” this month. The meetings were an opportunity for the Bethany congregation to join in conversation as we vision into Bethany’s future. A huge thank you to all who helped with the meetings as hosts, leaders and recorders. For those unable to attend, look for a postcard in today’s bulletin and use it to share responses to questions from the devotional (copies in Narthex) used at the meetings. Place card in offering plate or leave at church office. Watch for a summary of thoughts shared coming in September.

BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN

Thanks for your help!!
Thanks to the generous hearts at Bethany our recent baby bottle campaign raised $585 for the Cherish Center in Milford! Of this amount, 100% will go toward helping the Cherish Center accomplish their mission of transforming lives, strengthening families and enhancing the community.

GOD'S WORK -- OUR WHEELS

Transportation Needs -- Are you able to help?
On occasion at the church we receive calls for help with rides. It may be from a member who has driving restrictions from a recent surgery, from a community member needing help with transportation to medical appointment or someone in need of a ride to worship. The Faith-in-Action team is compiling a list of drivers whom we could call upon to help when the need arises and of drivers who could help share a ride to worship. If this sounds like something you would like to help with, look for a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Thanks!

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF

Matching Gift Opportunity
Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing one of the worst Ebola outbreaks ever. Lutheran World Relief and IMA World Health are at the epicenter of the outbreak providing health care facilities with lifesaving protection supplies like soap, gloves, gowns, masks and covered mattresses to curtail the spread of the virus. Both are working closely with the World Health Organization to identify and isolate infected individuals to provide treatment and stop the disease from spreading. Currently you have the opportunity to do TWICE as much to help them. Thanks to generous donors, gifts to LWR through July 24, 2019 will be matched – dollar for dollar, up to $167,667! Look for special giving envelopes for this purpose at the Welcome Center.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Seeking Committee Members
You may have noticed that we have not announced a scholarship this year for graduating seniors. The committee apologizes for this. Just so you know, the funds for this need to grow so that we can continue to offer scholarships in the future. We need two people to serve on this scholarship committee. Would you please prayerfully consider this and contact the office to volunteer.

MISSIONARY PARTNERSHIP

Through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

In July 2017, Joel & Rachel Watters visited Bethany to share about their call to ministry in Costa Rica through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Shortly after the Watters’ and their three children moved to southern Costa Rica, Central America, to evangelize and disciple students on several college campuses. Periodically we receive updates from them and most recently learned that their family has grown with the birth of a new baby girl, Elsie Eve. Look for their correspondence on the bulletin board by the church office! If you would like to support their mission visit: https://donate.intervarsity.org/donate/to/RachelJoelWatters

DISASTERS ABOUND!!

Please consider a donation to Lutheran Disaster Response today, either through your “directed giving” offering envelope or mail your gift directly to them. Thanks!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Christmas at Bethany 2019 is December 14!!

The date for Christmas at Bethany… Yesterday & today has been announced! Mark your calendars now for this event, happening on Saturday, December 14, 2019! It’s never too early to start working on those craft projects, or perfecting your lefse making! How will you take part in Christmas at Bethany this year? We will need many hands to make this tradition the wonderful event that it is. Would you like to take charge of the tea room? Or maybe you would like to work on advertising and promoting this year’s event… However you decide, we will look forward to coming together in fun and fellowship. Many hands make light work!

SEEKING OFFICE VOLUNTEERS

Are you able to help?
Office Volunteers are needed to help answer the phone during our Tuesday afternoon staff meetings and to cover some other times coming up in the next few weeks. This would involve light office work, greeting visitors and answering the telephone. If you are able to help please look over the schedule at the Welcome Center and sign up to help as you are able. Thank you!

BETHANY HAS AN AED

Keep alert for more on this...
You may have noticed the AED in the hallway by the church offices. This device was received through a grant opportunity made possible by Clay County Emergency Medical Services. So– just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Recently some of our council members received training on how to use an AED and in the coming weeks there will be opportunities for others to learn. Watch for more details coming in the newsletter and bulletins.

ALTAR FLOWERS

Sign up for a Sunday in 2019
Many thanks to everyone who provided flowers to beautify the altar in 2018. The flower chart for 2019 is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. If you are interested in providing altar flowers for a service in this new year, please fill out a yellow card and leave it at the church office or in the offering plate.

JOIN THE MOB - IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Saturday Mornings -- All Are Welcome!

One of the greatest challenges to men's spiritual, mental and physical health is the lack of close friends. Research tells us that men without a circle of close friends are far more likely to suffer from such things as anxiety and heart disease. Healthy men are connected to Christ and each other. Men Of Bethany (MOB) meet every Saturday morning at 7:30am for breakfast and a Bible study. This group welcomes everyone! Come as you are – enjoy the fellowship – you’ll leave feeling better. J

THE BETHANY HERALD

Keep "in the know" with happenings at Bethany!
Keep current with news and events at Bethany via our monthly newsletter! ”The Bethany Herald” is typically mailed at the end of each month. Delivery options include U.S. mail or email (depending on your preference), or find a link on our website to download a PDF of the Herald. If you are a member and not receiving our newsletter, please stop by or give a call to the church office (262-2327) to let us know. Non-members are welcome to receive the newsletter, too – likewise, just let us know that you’d like to get on our mailing list. If you are receiving the Herald in the mail and want to switch to electronic delivery, send an email request to us at bethany@bethluthspencer.com.  REMINDER:  If you are submitting items for the Herald, please deliver them to the office by the 20th of the month. Thanks!!

ARCHIVE ROOM & COMMITTEE

Share your time & talents!!
The Archive Committee needs your help. A room in the lower level of the church is being renovated to contain our important papers, blueprints, photos, memorabilia, etc. Good recordkeeping is important for homes, businesses, taxes, and the milestones in our lives. An archive holds and preserves documents that provide evidence of the past are produced in a variety of formats from paper to electronic. These materials require protection and preservation to prevent the loss of your congregation's history that would occur if the material was neglected. Are you interested in joining the archive committee? Give us a call (262-2327) and let us know!

ROOM AT THE TABLE

You Can Help Support this Mission
Please consider making a donation to support this mission of Bethany that provides morning milk at Johnson School for students who are unable to have it as part of their snack. The program also helps with meals for families in crisis and holiday meals at the public schools for struggling families. This ensures a festive and nutritious meal at Thanksgiving & Christmas time, so no child is embarrassed by having to sit at a separate table with only a sandwich if their parents are behind on payments. Let’s help make “room at the table” for everyone!

CALLING ALL "TECHIES"

Join the Sound Booth Crew!
Please consider joining the tech team. Projector operators, camera/video recorders and sound people are needed for our worship services. These are step-by-step processes that you can learn and we are willing to train. If you would like to be a part of the “tech team” please sign up at the Welcome Center. You will be contacted with information about some upcoming training sessions. Thanks!
